One of the most anticipated films at Panic Fest 2025 is the Canadian film 40 Acres. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where food is dangerously scarce, one family must defend their farmland against thieves, invaders, and even cannibals.
The film was directed by R.T. Thorne (Blindspot, Kung Fu), who also wrote the film with Glenn Taylor. The future they’ve created in the film is bleak and understated, focusing on this one family and their land. It’s an engrossing story that speaks to how quickly society collapses when resources are lost. It also weaves important themes of heritage, which makes the family’s connection to their home so much more than just survival.
The plot is engrossing and filled with tension and both the visuals and performances add to the appeal. While every performance in 40 Acres is fantastic, there are two that leave a lasting impact. Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) plays the family matriarch, Hailey, brilliantly acting as the backbone and muscle of the family. Counter-balancing her is Hailey’s son and the emotional core of the film, Manny, wonderfully played by Kataem O’Connor (Time Cut). 40 Acres has great production design as well as well done practical effects for the more gruesome moments. Tying all of these elements together is a beautiful yet unnerving musical score by Todor Kobakov (Humane).
40 Acres delivers plenty of action and suspense as it journeys to find hope in a desolate future.
OVERALL RATING: 8/10
